A line in the sand

We don’t want to get ahead of the court in Curacao in the case of Member of Parliament Jacintha Constancia but we are of the opinion that the demand of just 200 hours of community service for hitting fellow MP Giselle McWilliam during a meeting of Parliament in February of this year a mere slap on the wrist.

Added to that demand is a conditional ban from office for two years.

That is where the prosecutor could have gone a step further in our opinion – by dropping the term conditional and demand that Constancia never shows her face in Parliament again.

Immediately after the incident, Constancia indicated that she would step down, but she later got second thoughts and kept her seat.

The court has a fine opportunity here to draw a line in the sand.
